Nothing else really happens when the old man is in the boat. This is shown in the book because the old man never gives up on the swordfish even though he is well overpowered. This great individual, the man who stands alone, is not alone completely by choice. Thus begins an incredible struggle to land the fish which lasts for an agonising two days and two nights. Fuentes signing this illustration - Hemingway, the Pilar, and Fuentes. Despite the constant fluctuations, Max returns to three settings: his childhood memories of the Graces—a wealthy middle-class family living in a rented cottage home, the "Cedars"—during the summer holidays; the months leading up to the death of his wife, Anna; and his present stay at the Cedars cottage home in Ballyless—where he has retreated since Anna's death.

Do you know what Banville said to me? Santiago fought with her for two days and suffered a lot. The narrator old man in the see is a 3rd person perspective. The sail was patched with flour sacks and, furled, it looked like the flag of permanent defeat. For two days they battle, and Santiago wins that battle, but then loses the great fish on the way home to the scavenger sharks who find him easy prey.

The main message of the book is to never give up on what you want. But you have a right to. Santiago kills a great mako shark with his harpoon, but he loses the weapon. Reception[ edit ] The poet Michael Longley expressed admiration for The Sea, and described Banville as "a wonderful writer". In the tradition of great and eccentric travellers, his journey started badly when he was refused permission to set off from Chile; when he departed from Peru, he realised he had set off without a tin opener, and then ran out of cooking gas.
